Nanguan

Nanguan is the classical music style originated from Fujian in 7th century. In Chinese characters, "Nang" stands for South and "Guang" stands for wind instrument such as flute. So Nanguan means the musical style from south part of China and was composed mostly by flue instruments.

The first Nanguan troupe in Xigang Festival was from Putuo temple of Hailiao. This troupe was founded in 1856. Before then, most troupes which attend Xigang Festival were martial crews such as Song Jiang troupes. Because Song Jiang was considered to be aggressive and violent, that's why the residents in Hailiao proposed to form a musical troupe which was much gentle、tender and educative.
