Cheng Huang

The homage to Cheng Huang has been existing since Zhou dynasty. In Chinese mythology, Cheng Huang was a divinity empowered with 2 functions --- one is to keep the town free from disturbance of evil spirits; the other is to judge the souls in underworld. But from Ming dynasty, Cheng Huang was no longer a single divinity, but a title designated to the spirit who ever won glory before departure from mortal world. Therefore every village, town or city has its own Cheng Huang to guard the peace.

In Qing An temple, you can find another 2 statues ahead of Cheng Huang. Both are henchmen of Cheng Hunag --- one monitors the deed of every living being in mortal world; the other is to execute punishment onto souls who committed sins in pre-existence.
